Silly Raftin Fools We Are
So, there’s a NEW “Jean Holmes Annual Crazy Whitewater Rafting Trip”!
On last May’s American River trip, my guide KZ invited me to come down to West Virginia to raft the Gauley River this fall (because I’m such an insanely good paddler).
So I grabbed Lachelle, and we headed to hicksville! The drive out from the DC area was beautiful.
We all loved the weekends we spent at South Bay on the American, but the campgrounds at Rivers Resort were pretty darn nice. Shel and I got situated in our cabin and then headed to the Red Dog Saloon to look for KZ. We said hi and then decided to try out the BBQ at Dirty Ernies down the street, which was pretty damn good.
We got up the next morning, checked in, and headed down to the Gauley for some class V rapids! Not only did we have a great guide with KZ, but we also lucked out and had some really cool people from Louisville, KY on our boat. I’m so sorry I can’t remember everyone’s names… (Alin, Alex, Ralph, Tina, Julia… plus 2 more… sorry!) Very cool folks we would have liked to hang out with and do the Upper Gauley with on Sunday, but I set my alarm for 5:30pm instead of am! Ooops! It was probably a good thing anyway, I was wiped and actually got a little cold the next day. But hopefully we’ll hook up with them next year.
We had a GREAT time on the river. The rapids were awesome, the water was WAY warmer than on the American, nobody got hurt, and we had great company. Oh, and how could I forget! We all got to enjoy Alin bearing his chest for the video and showing us his most outSTANDing kinda hairy nipples. Yup.
The bus ride back was- errr, ahem – interesting, lol. Really bad jokes, boobies, scary locals, the “trailer” game, and extra beer for Jean cuz damnit, “I’m Single!” You’ll have to ask for details.
Tons more fun was had around the “Pokerpinsky” campfire, and then later again at the Red Dog. No one was drunk of course.

We took a different route home, which was really nice too.
Great scenery and accomodations, great adventure on the river, and most importantly, great company!
Thanks again to KZ for inviting me down and being a great guide and so much fun to hang out with. And thanks to Shel for coming with me and being such a great friend as always!
