Pandora continued...

I almost forgot! They also have started posting Podcasts on their blog: http://blog.pandora.com/podcast/

I’m not sure how interesting they are to non-musicians, but I just listened to the two Podcasts about Drumming, which were pretty interesting and will help me talk to my drummers and sound slightly less like a jackass when I’m trying to tell them what kind of beat I’m looking for.

I LOVE Pandora!

If you haven’t heard of it out before, go to www.pandora.com and check it out. The idea behind Pandora is to kind of build your own (commercial free) radio station. When you start a new station, it asks you to identify “seed” artists or songs, and then Pandora’s search engine matches songs or artists that have similar characteristics.

But it doesn’t stop there. You can tell Pandora whether you like a song it chose for you or not so that it can continue to tailor your likes and dislikes for that station. You can also flag artists or songs, get more information about them (the Backstage feature), or create a new station based on that new song Pandora chose. I think you can create as many stations as you like. There are other features I haven’t even explored yet, but I LOVE it. I’ve discovered a ton of new music with Pandora.

Yippeeeee!!!

I got my taxes done last night. ahhhhhhhhh. I hate having that hanging over my head. And I’m getting a pretty decent refund, which is coming at a REALLY good time. I’ll be able to get all my guitars set up, my amp tubes replaced, and get a pedal that works for my piano. Maybe I’ll even go out to dinner and see a show or something!! Don’t worry, at least half of my refund will be set aside for a rainy day (probably when my kaka truck explodes).

Nice to know...

... that I can still go back to the internet industry if I REALLY wanted to. Which I don’t, but it’s nice to be wanted. I’m getting recruited by Microsoft to work for their search engine marketing division. It wasn’t even a mass email, it was complete with a gramatical error and my first name. Somehow they even found my phone number and left me a voicemail. Considering I’ve been out of the industry for over 2 years they must be desperate!

Solicitation for guitar lessons

As most of you know, I give private guitar lessons. I do all my advertising on Craigslist and put my phone number up there (but not my name or any indication that I’m female, I don’t want any freaks showing up at my door). In the past 8 months that I’ve been posting my advertisement up there I haven’t had any problems or strange people showing up.

So Tuesday night I’m sound asleep. My phone rings. I always worry about middle of the night phone calls, always assuming it’s bad news or an emergency. I didn’t recognize the number but answered anyway. “Yeah I’m calling about guitar lessons.” .... long pause, my brain is trying to process this ridiculous information… “At 2 in the morning you’re calling about guitar lessons” I say in my tired, you’re a freaking moron voice. He sounds annoyed with me: “uhhh, yeah”. Like, why not be calling for guitar lessons at 2am?! “Could you call back tomorrow?” He sounds even more annoyed as he responds “yeah, I guess.” Needless to say he didn’t call back the next day but I’m VERY tempted to call him very early every morning as soon as I get up to ask if he’s sure he doesn’t want guitar lessons.

I have coooool friends!

My old roommate and great friend Erin sent me this today when she came across it looking for an old email. It’s an Evite party invitation from back in May of 2004 for the going away party she threw for me. The AWESOME going away party she threw for me!!! Thanks Shmetey Petey, I miss you tons!!!

Event: Going Away Party for Jean!!
From: Erin Peters
Location: =======================
When: Fri, 05/21/04, 7:00PM

Ch-check it out.

Jean can catch a groove to put your feet on the move. She’s got a notion
that has caused a commotion. She’s going to Philly, to Philly…to Philly.

Everybody knows she digs musical sounds, strong and a sundry like her coffee grounds. Funky Holmes said ‘See ya!’ to the ‘net’ – making music for a livin’, she’s dead set. She ain’t joining no barbershop quartet. She’s going to Philly, to Philly…to Philly.

Let’s tear it up with the Jeano and do some damage (not too much though, this is my Dad’s house – yo), throw a few back and come at her like a heart attack – you know she’ll be packing her music rack cause the girlie’s going off the beaten track…….She’s going to Philly, to Philly…to Philly.

This is a great reminder to me of how much faith my good friends have in me. Not to mention how freakin funny they are. Anyway, I’ll always take any inspiration I can get, and my friends have always provided TONS of it!

Web 2.0

Check out this cool video. It isn’t someone making a jackass out of themselves, it’s a thoughtful look at where the web is now and where it’s going:

Whoah dude

My ensemble instructor gave us a tune to learn last week called “Dizzy Atmosphere”, written by Dizzy Gillespie in the late 40’s. I didn’t really have a chance to look at it or listen to it till now, and uhh, yeah, good luck to us. It’s a REALLY fast bop tune (around 220 bpm) with really slick little triplet licks all over the place. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to comp the chords fast enough! (No less play the melody or improvise over the changes.) Oye!

Yeah, so good luck to me.
