Fun with XRAYS!
So this all started when I sprained my ankle the last night in Spain. After it continued buckling on me and swelling up after three weeks, I decided to go to the doc and make sure it wasn’t something more serious. I decided around the same time to see a chiropractor for my chronic lower back pain. So, I had x-rays taken of my back and my ankle at the same time.
Turns out I have category one osteoarthritis (which may also explain my achy knees). I ALSO have an extra L6 vertebrae.

Most people have 5 lumbar vertebrae, I have 6. I also have an extra disc in there. I guess I’m more evolved than most, heehee. Anyway, that should actually translate to being hypo-limber, but as my doc so expertly explained, having that extra vertebrae made my muscles “freak out” and “do things they shouldn’t do”. Yeah. So, I’m going to get adjusted once a week now, and learning some fitness ball exercises to limber me up more before I start working out again. Losing weight will also help, as if I didn’t already have incentive enough before.
And to top it all off, my ankle is actually fine – just a pulled ligament – but my chiropractor also noticed that I have a bone spur in the heel of my foot. Bone spurs are indicative of arthritis, and can lead to plantar fasciitis. If these things aren’t enough motivation for me to get into better shape nothing is.
Oye, I’m just a mess. But I don’t want to be forever, and I definitely don’t want to be a sedentary old fart!
