Anyone for some Kava?
Some people say hello with and handshake. Others with a warm hug. The Fijians like to say hello with a little drink that tastes like muddy water and makes your tongue numb.
A tradional welcome will start with the males and elders of the tribe preparing the kava and offering it in a ceremony. The drink is prepared in a special bowl with lots of symbolism. Starting with the chief and elders, the kava is offered one by one and then eventually to the guests. To my surprise, I was offered the kava first. Well, I didn’t quite know what to expect from this potion that looked a lot like river water served in a coconut shell. It did make my tongue numb and then I felt a little woosy. Oh wait, that was probably from the cocktail hour that followed. How about that for a welcome?
