Bushwalking to Dramatic Views
Aussies are tough. Make no mistake.
We had a couple of fine days in the forecast so we decided to travel to the east coast to have a look at the sunny coast. We arrived in St. Marys a small inland city at the gateway to the coast. The travel guide said St. Patrick’s Head was a steep hike to a 360 degree view. Little did I know how challenging this bush walk was going to be.
I’m used to walking. I love nature walks. But this was a bit more challenging than usual. Above the rolling hills a summit with a steep craggly crown of rocks overlooked the short distance to the coast and surrounding valley. The bushwalk was a tough upward trek. The incline rose so steeply that a cable had been planted to assist your footing up the rock face. When you think that you’ve made it to the top, an additional climb over precarious rocks until the summit. The view from the top had a vertigo inducing drop but an amazing panaroma of the valley and the golden sanded beaches of the coast. Well, a lot of this climb left me a bit out of breath. The embarassing part was that behind us, then past us, then resting at the top was a group of aussies who seemed to be effortlessly making their way to the top. The elder lady leading the group had only one arm. Ok, aussies are tough. That’s the story I’m sticking with. Its not that I lack the physical fitness, its just that this is the home turf for the tough aussies.
