Cradle Mountain
You are now looking at one of the most famous sites in Tasmania, Cradle Mountain National Park. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come here each year from all over the world, now up by two more.
There are heaps of great walks to do at the park. We were quite lucky with the weather. Normally cradle mountain is covered up in grey misty clouds, but for our trip the sun came out and dried up all the rain. We had two really beautiful days. On the first day we did our longest bushwalk yet, about 5 hours altogether. Views were amazing and the visibility was perfect, as you can see.
We took a walk past Crater Falls and Crater Lake, an alpine lake. The track lead us to a high point at Marion’s Lookout where you could see the breathtaking views all the way around. Then we came down and around to the Wombat Pool, past Lila Lake and finally to Dove Lake.
In the evenings we walked out on the Cradle Valley Boardwalk to see the wombats come out. We saw so many wombats we lost count. We also saw some wallabies, pademelons and possums. And absolutely no snakes.
On the second day we took the track around Dove Lake, then took the Cradle Valley Boardwalk. We saw Waldheim, which means forest home. It was the home of the Weindorfers, who loved the area so much that they worked for it’s preservation as a national park and world heritage area. More wombats in the evening.
On our last day in the park it finally began to rain. We only did a few short walks, but we did manage to see a lot of wildlife in the forest. Here is a photo of one of the too-cute-to-resist wombats at Cradle Mountain.

Sounds like a beautiful trip you two. Rob, did you take only 2 pictures? Hehe. We have a Crater Lake here in Oregon, but no cute wombats.p.e.horner () (URL) - November 08, 2004 at 11:31 am
