Frodo and the fountain of doom

For those diehard LOTR fans out there, have I got a treat for you. It’s a lesser known LOTR fan site, one that’s not in any of the location guidebooks. So this is a site that is not actually IN any of the movies. But it has special Frodo significance.

__ Warning: To those with small children or weak stomachs, this is a good time to quit reading.__

In the pre-Return of the King movie release days, our friend Elijah Wood (who will from this point be referred to only as Frodo) was doing the usual celebrity promo track. On this track, as we all know, is the stop at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Being a fan of Leno and Frodo, I chose to watch this program, especially as Rob was working an evening shift and I tend to watch an insane amount of television at these times. During the course of the interview, Frodo was asked about his leisure time in NZ. Did he tell stories of the gorgeous lands, the courageous people, etc.? No, Frodo chose to recount the following story.

He and other unnamed members of cast and crew had often seen a fountain in a main square of town. This fountain, according to Frodo, was quite ridiculous, as it didn’t work. The cups are meant to pour from the top down to the pool at the bottom, transferring from cup to cup. Frodo and other cast and crew would comment on the stupidity of the fountain and make disparaging comments about it daily. One night, after a particularly heavy amount of carousing, a very drunk Frodo and company passed the fountain. Determined to do something about this outrageous monstrosity, they did what any group of righteously angered, ridiculously drunk people would do. They peed on it.

Fast forward to our first night in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. Beautiful, if a bit overly windy, with lots to see and do. We headed out after dinner, stopping several times to see the sights. We passed a fountain, with multi-colored cups (see photo above) and noted that it wasn’t working very well. We continued walking, roughly had gone 20 feet, when I stopped in my tracks and shouted, “Hey, that’s the fountain Frodo peed on!” We ran back to take this lovely photo and the rest is history.

(For those concerned, Rob is not peeing, but merely basking in the unworking glory of the pee fountain.)
