Swimming With the Dolphins

Erica and I took a holiday in the beautiful Bay of Islands in the Northland of New Zealand last weekend. We took a cruise to see the beautiful green islands with secluded beaches. Part of our cruise inlcuded the possibility of sighting and swimming with dolphins. I have always longed for the opportunity to interact with these beautiful animals so I suited up and put on my snorkel for an experience swimming with the dolphins.

The captain steered the boat near a group of dolphins and all the swimmers dove off the back of the boat to interact with the dolphins. The experience can vary depending on what type of mood the dolphins are in. Sometimes they are quite playful. Other times the swimmers are not interesting enough to capture the dolphins interest and they just swim away.

Once I jumped into the cold water, I was surrounded by dolphins that swam around me in circles. I could hear their high pitched vocalizations and they were close enough so that it seemed like I could almost reach out and touch them. The group had two “dives” with the dolphins that seemed to pass so quickly.

One of the guides on our kayak trip grew up in the bay of islands and saw dolphins on most days of his life. He said that every time that he sees dolphins is still like the mystery and wonder of the first time that he saw them. I am in awe of these beautiful creatures that are so amazing to see.

That sounds amazing and terrifying all at the same time. It’s cool that you got that experience! I have to ask…how is your wife handling your dolphin swimming adventure? Any cracks? :)
