Merry Christmas!

A very Merry Christmas to all our friends around the world! Erica and I had an Australian Christmas on the beach and seeing the sights on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria completed with some fresh crayfish (pacific lobster). Although the climate didn’t feel like a typical Christmas, we tried to get into the christmas spirit with the construction of a ginger bread house and decorated our pseudo christams tree (bamboo sculputre) with candy canes. We are thankful for the rich ways we have been blessed throughout this year.

We wish you a merry summer

Complain as I might about cold weather, ice, and snow; Christmas just doesn’t feel the same without it. Australia is all lit up with lights and decorations for Christmas, but it just isn’t quite the same when it’s 80 degrees outside. We went to a Christmas service at church Saturday night and sweated through it in our big gym with no windows and no a/c.

The good news? We’re having Christmas on the beach, Aussie style. We’ll be on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and afterwards we will head into Melbourne.

So instead of “Merry Christmas” we will tell you in the Aussie way to “Have a good Chrissy!”

Perks of the Job

Most days I get a lot of satisfaction from my job. I get to meet people from all waks of life. I have the opportunity to help people and make a significant difference. I am in a position to alleviate pain, provide comfort and lighten dark moods with humor. Once in a great while I have the chance to use the skills I’ve been blessed with to save a life.
Most of the perks of my job are the appreciation of patient with a “thanks doc” on their way out of the emergency department. So far on my locum I have been privaleged to a few additional perks.

Ain't we lucky we got 'em...Good Times

Last night was the final night of the New Directions youth group for 2004. They are now on summer break. I’ve been helping out for the last few weeks and have really enjoyed getting to know the kids. Last night we had a big party; I brought brownies. I know it may be difficult to believe, but for many it was the first ever taste of brownie. We also had karaoke, which is always a hit.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the end of things. We are ending up a lot of things at church this week and in the next few. Last night the youth finished, tonight is the last night of a class I’m teaching, tomorrow is the last craft group. This church even stops services after the special Christmas service. I don’t think we have service again until January. The last one seems a little strange to me, but all of this closure is helpful too. We are leaving Launceston sometime after January 21st. It still feels far away but is coming up on us rather quickly. We’ve seen quite a bit of this state and now we’re getting ready to leave it.

Dolphins on the Port Bow

Our latest travels have taken us to Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania. While on our Gordon River Cruise, our ship was joined by some playful dolphins. It was quite amazing to watch them dive under the boat and pop up out of the water. They really seemed to enjoy playing with us. Amazing creatures and so beautiful to watch.
