This is dumb...
Did any of you hear about this “study”/website on 96.5 The Buzz this morning? If you didn’t, you’re better off. I don’t even think it’s worth mentioning except that it made me so annoyed that I feel like I have to write about it before I can stop thinking about it.
Outofservice.com was created by some people (the guy being interviewed on the radio called himself a doctor, but then confessed saying that he still had a year of school left) who thought that they could assign personalities to people based on the type of music that they listen to. He called their study “empirical,” but the majority of the study was done by an online survey. (Let me know if you know how to “observe” different people’s experiences of listening to a certain type of music while they’re taking an online survey.)
Ok, fine. Take the survey. Have fun. Check out my results. I’m still mad about it.

Tim:
I’ve found that 96.5 is worthless, as is all big-corporation owned FM radio. The morning programs are often the most base, unintelligent, unstimulating, and boring waste of time on the dial.
Books on CD or “Democracy Now” on KKFI (or perhaps NPR occasionally) are what I tune into. (Making my way, albeit very slowly, throughout Dicken’s “Great Expectations” currently.)
But I digress. I took the test, and it was right on about the complex music, but I found that the survey was WAY too simplistic to get an accurate result for me. For example, when asked about country music, I had to be middle ground, since I hate that new rock/country/pop crap that’s played on the country stations. But, give me Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Sun Volt, Old 97’s, and even old Honkey Tonk (such as Hank Sr, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline) and I’m groovin’. Of course, I couldn’t make this distinction in my answer, so the results were skewed.
Just some musings of mine own.

I agree! One of the only reasons that I switch to mainstream radio in the morning is to wait out repeated sections of news on NPR. I’m usually not pleased with what I hear, but once in a while, they do play a tune that I dig.
Actually, I’m surprised by Kansas City radio. For a “college town” the lack of creative programming is astonishing. I hated Los Angeles radio when I was there and after two years of living here in Kansas City, I have similar feelings.
I saw Sun Volt at the Ventura Theater back in 1994 (I think) and they blew me away! Incredible musicians that gave much respect to their “legacy.” A truely inspiring concert.
Nice survey results, by the way, Peder.

I agree. Morning Edition is painfully (though probably by necessity, given the audience) akin to CNN’s Headline News, which I abhor. It’s the little pieces here and there during M.E. that I yearn for, like this little ditty re: PDX’s own cosmopolitan band Pink Martini.

Thanks for the link, Peder… I listened to the interview at lunch. It was a bit long-winded about the subject, but still interesting. Back when Seal was just about to release his second album, he said a lot of the same things — about how one’s entire life goes into their first album and the pressure to come up with an equal “masterpiece” a year later is nearly impossible to do. Nevertheless, Seal’s second album was great. (As a side-note, I think that my second album was better than the first, but I’m biased.)
Seems like these comments should have a Blog post that’s all their own!
