Being saved...

Saved! I’m always looking for ways to increase my personal acknowledgement of what the “Gospel” is. Whether it’s through reading scripture, or praying, or reading, or talking to people… God provides wisdom in many ways. I’ve written about it a few times on this Weblog (or, if I haven’t actually made a point, I’ve threatened that I would one day). But, I’m still not there — I don’t know if I’ll ever be.

My friend, Mary, wrote something today that really spoke some Gospel truth to me. It’s about being saved:

A lot of Christians use the term “saved” as if it’s a one time redemption thing. They say, “I got saved,” and what they mean is, “I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior and prayed the sinner’s prayer and now I’m going to heaven.” However, unless I hear someone else using it this way, this is not how it is processed in my mind. When I think of being saved, I think of those small instances in which one moment has been changed, one moment that adds into the great equation that is the gradual redemption of my life as a whole. You see, I’ve gotten saved a lot.
I really suggest you read the rest of Mary’s story here.

I don’t have much more to add at all. Thanks, Mary.

I know I should just keep my mouth (or fingers) shut but I think she’s redefining the word for the sake of poeticism and a touching Hallmark moment. Cool post but the outcome is a confusion of terms and definitions. Saved is clearly a one time thing not to mention determined before you’re even born. Sanctification on the other hand… thats a life long story. I think thats what she’s talking about. Anyhow, thats my response.

P.S. Someone should kick the S**t out of her brother. I think I’ll get her a gun too.

Tim, you’re welcome. But I should be thanking you—for the compliment of being quoted and linked here.

Dennis, I am not redefining anything. I’m saying that the word has more than one definition, and that in this instance, I am identifying my experience with a meaning of the word that is other than that which is traditionally used by Christians to refer to a conversion experience.

As for my brother, he doesn’t need anything kicked out of him. It was kicked out long before he ever raised a hand to me; his story has a lot to it that this part of my own story didn’t encompass. These days he’s a pretty great guy; I would be hard-pressed to find any reason to do anything other than offer him plenty of grace.

yeah… i can see how the word can be used in a different context without redefining it. my apologies. however, if “it” was kicked out before he ever raised a hand to you, it wasn’t kicked hard enough. I can be graceful and break his arm. but glad hes a great guy… i’ll get a refund on the gun.
