Cheese Wars...

Star Wars Episode III - The Cheese StarA bunch of us just left Episode III. I apologize if you’re a Star Wars fan… I wanted to like it — I really did, but… Ugh.

From reading others’ reviews, I knew the dialog was supposed to be somewhat lame at times, but come on. It was terrible! I can’t believe some of the lines in this film: from the cheesy love-talk between Anakin and Padme to the dropped hints alluding to the other Star Wars films… Just plain awful.

The battle scenes were done well, but they were too long and too many for my tastes — and that’s saying a lot, because I love fights and battles in movies. Speaking of which, Yoda didn’t fail to please when performing his fight scenes. I get a huge kick out of seeing him flip around and act like Bruce Lee.

Anyway, I don’t feel like I wasted any money seeing Episode III. I do like partaking in the hype and the saga. I just wish more thought had been put into the dialog; it does so much for character development, not to mention the overall movie-watching experience (I thought filmmakers knew this).

You must have forgotten the Anakin/Padme dialogue from Episode II—it was the most terrible thing I’d ever heard, so I’m guessing Episode III is just more of the same. Unless I can be lured into the theatre by promise of an abundance of free snacks, I think I’ll probably pass on this installment.

Don’t worry. As another blogger pointed out, even if the dialogue sucks, it doesn’t matter because this movie is 80% lightsaber fights and starship battles. I think Lucas got influenced by Kill Bill (which I DIDN’T see by the way…), as evidenced by the severed limbs in every other scene!

I must say that after taking with Sacheen last night, I feel a little better about the movie — my perpective may have been a little skewed… I still don’t think I’m ready to forgive the extremely horrid dialog yet, though.

As for the severed limbs… Episode II was on TV tonight and when I flipped to it during a commerical, I was just in time to watch Jenga Fett’s head being chopped off. Then, during another commercial, I was in time to see the fight between the Jedis and the droids — more limbs went flying. I don’t know if Kill Bill had anything to do with it, Shayne. :-p

Amen, brother. What sucks is i’m just glad its over. i never thought i’d feel that way. the girlfriend loved it…. that was a fun argument on the way home, haha.

I so agree with you Tim. I mourn all of the lost potential of eps I, II and now III. So much of the dialogue was groan-worthy (and good actors, like Natalie Portman and SamJack seemed to know it, while Hayden was petulantly oblivious, and would Yoda just stop talking?); the pacing and timeline was abbreviated (Today I am pouting, tomorrow, a Sith. Today I am barely showing, tomorrow I am giving birth to two three-month olds and dying for no apparant reason. Today I am kidnapped, tomorrow, I rule the world.); and the light sabre fights (and much of the CGI stuff) feel so “been there, done that.”

Ah, the effects of greed on quality.

I kind of hate to say it, but I actually liked the movie. However I should qualify that. I liked it only in the context of the whole double trilogy. If it were a movie devoid of context it would have been horrible. Having said that I think the first two movies were horrible, definitely in my list of 10 worst movies ever made.

I feel like we as a society have given George Lucas a big ol’ “pass” and I’m not sure how I feel about it. Just because he had a good idea once a long time ago in a galaxy far away does that mean we have to continue to reward him with hundreds of millions of dollars for something that really is sub-par? Or do we reward him because he’s created something that has become so much a part of pop-culture?

I feel like you go to any Star Wars movie with certain expectations. If those expectations are for a bit of fun and incredible special effects knowing that you’ll have to endure some giggle-inducing dialog you’ll probably come out with a favorable impression (except for episodes I and II). If you’re expecting an edge-of-your-seat, Oscar-winning action-adventure, you’re probably going to be disappointed.
