Firefox woes ammended (Extending Firefox)...

Extending FirefoxIn my last post, I forgot to mention one crucial step that occurred between launching and discovering that all of my hard-earned personalization had been wiped clean: a prompt-box popped-up asking me to choose a profile… When this happened, I chose “Default” (as I’m the only one who uses this computer). When I clicked “OK,” though, I was presented with an error message that told me I could not use the default profile and that I had to create a new one.

This is where the trouble began…

Creating a new profile in Firefox (or any application, for that matter) starts a new “clean” version of the application for a new user to use. (Hence, all of my missing stuff.) The thing is, I didn’t really think about this until just a minute ago — after re-installing all of my beloved .

Anyway, this new idea inspired me to go find the old “Default” directory for Firefox and check its contents… And, lo and behold, all of my old Extensions, bookmarks, et cetera, were still safely sitting in the directory!

Ok, so this allowed me to recover my bookmarks (which are now happily located back in my new Firefox profile), but since I had already re-installed the Extensions, the old ones didn’t really help. Still, the bookmarks were a great find and I’m happy to have them all back.

Lastly, I thought I’d post a screen-grab of my Extensions list here, as well as list links to every one of ‘em (you know, God forbid I should ever lose my Extensions again, but just in case).

Of course, there are hundreds of other Extensions available to install, but these are the ones I use everyday (or, at least, a couple of times a week).

I’m glad you were able to salvage some of the items which you lost. I lost my mind once – but then I found it again.

Yeah… The questions still remains as to why Firefox wouldn’t let me use the Default profile, but, oh well.

As for finding minds… I’ve been working on that for years — with no luck.

I’ve had a similar problem to this. So, thanks for directing me to the folder with all of my old boomarks! :-)

Is there an easy way to import them? How did u restore them>

Graham… Sorry to hear that! It’s frustrating, isn’t it?

Anyway, just copy all of the bookmark files (they’re numbered and have the .html extension) from your old profile folder into your new profile folder. You can also do this with the Extensions, etc., but since I had already re-created most of them, I didn’t need to do that.

In the end, it was really straight forward:

Bookmarks >> Manage Bookmarks >> File >> Import >> From File…

I’m chuffed now, ‘cos when it happend I was distraught! :-)

hi guys,

i know this was posted months ago but it saved my life! lost of 100s of bookmarks needed for work a few days ago, tried everything. the best solution is always the simplest! cheers anyway!
