Further thoughts on the redemptive qualities of Kill Bill,,,
TheOoze has just published a very educated and well-written essay, by Eric David (a fellow believer and filmmaker) detailing the redemptive qualities of Quentin Terantino‘s Hard Boiled/Kung Fu epic, Kill Bill (Vols. 1 & 2), as well as some of his other films. It’s quite a lengthy essay, but well worth the read.
I wrote a much shorter, but equally as enthusiastic, review of Kill Bill here.
And, if you haven’t seen the Kill Bill films yet… You should.

One of the few films I walked out on. Laughing at the crusifixion of Christ? The man is deranged.

I don’t think you got his point, Doug… He didn’t say that he was laughing at the crucifixion, but at the brutality of it — which is the same response that most people who saw Kill Bill had during that movie.

Laughing at brutality seems contradictary to me and cold. For me I don’t understand that type of response. When I went to the movie I heard no one laugh when Christ was crucified. When you read the entire paragraph from the post you referenced you get a little “insight” into Tarrentino.

Well, I don’t agree (I mean, yeah, you get insight and all, but I interpret it differently)... But, that’s ok.

Thanks for reading the article and for your comments. I thought Q was laughing more at Gibson’s decision to have the guards drop the cross and have to flip Christ over, like a lamb on a skewer. He did mention that he saw the serious side of the movie, so I would tend to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Okay, no way am i reading that whole article on an empty stomach. But i did forward to the whole controversy here. I actually agree with Tim on this. Granted, Terantino is being vulgar and a bit tactless, he’s referring to the picture, not Christ. Though my brow was still quite raised when i read it. Interesting article, Eric. I can’t fully endorse it but i did enjoy it, if that makes sense.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kill Bill. I think it’s brilliant, and woe unto those who can’t appreciate Tarantino at his most show-stopping.

Why a woe to me and what woe to me is there?
No one still has given me a reason why people laugh when violence is shown. The emotion of laughing when violence is shown does not make sense to me. I guess I’m reacting to the necessity to laugh in the midst of these scenes.

I’m not a psychologist, so I’m not going to try to defend the laughter… What I can say is that it’s probably nervous laughter rather than laughter for humor’s sake.

DH: I’m sorry if you thought I literally wished woe upon y’all Kill Bill haters. I don’t think I appreciate laughter in the midst of gratuitous violence or suffering. What I do appreciate is the age-old adage of punishment towards persons done wrong. Kill Bill mayn’t be the poster movie of Christian forgiveness, but I will not deny that I felt an immense thrill when the Bride plugged each person who did her wrong, and it’s for this particular retelling of the classic revenge story that I give Tarantino due credit.

Um, Walter? Who’s that?
Anyway, Ganns’ comment makes complete sense to me.
