Getting back to business, some thoughts on 9/11, etc...

Five years ago today, I had just moved out to Kansas City, Missouri, from Southern California. More on that in a minute, though...

My parents left yesterday after a week-long visit. We had a great time and were happy that they got to spend so much time with . You can read more about the visit (and see some photos) here if you'd like.

Hopefully, I'll have time to post on the remaining chapters three of ”.” I'm almost finished reading it, but with my parents here and all, I didn't have much time for much else. If you don't know what I'm talking about (the book, I mean), the beginning of the series can be found here.

Speaking of September 11 (how's that for a smooth transition?)...

Five years ago, not only was the culture that surrounded me different, but I didn't know my way around, I didn't have a full-time job -- I had just started working as a substitute teacher -- and my only friend in the area was my girlfriend, Julianna (who is now my wife).

I can't remember if I had been called that morning with a job at one of the school districts I was working in or not. Maybe I did and I was getting ready for work. Maybe I didn't. In any case, I was up, watching the morning news when it happened. I do know that I ended up not going to work that day.

Julianna worked the swing shift back then. I knew she wouldn't be awake for another couple of hours, so I didn't bother calling or going over to visit. I'm pretty sure I got a phone call from her pretty soon after I was up, though. Weird.

As I was watching the first part of the made-for-TV movie last night -- and thinking about my traveling parents -- I was thinking about how differently so many things now work (or don't work, depending on your state of mind) in this country. To some people, though (speaking of Matt Lauer's interview of George W. Bush this morning on ) things still seem very much the same. Again... Weird.

Anyway, I don't have much to say about all of this. It is still sad for me and, in fact, devastating to others. After five years, 9/11 is still on the forefront of the American conscience.

Being in Australia meant that the events of 9/11 happened at night.

I was just heading off to bed and switched on my bedside radio. Very early reports were starting to filter through.

I jumped back out of bed and told my wife Pauline that something had happened in the US. We switched on the TV and a short while later they started reporting what was going on.

There was only limited shots initially that were played over and over until they got more cameras into the area.

We stayed up most of the night watching things unfold.

Thanks for commenting, Rodney. For some reason I tend to forget the perspectives from around the world in these issues. Your comment is a stark reminder of the fact that local trauma is, many times, felt globally. It is also a good reminder for us to constantly pray for those outside of our “circumference.”
