PDA Hunt: The Nokia N800...

I think I may have found what I’ve been searching for: the (or whatever is available by the time I have the money to buy something).

It’s got most of the media/file features I desire, web (Opera 8 with Flash 7!), VOIP, video conferencing, etc. And, what it doesn’t have can probably be found here. Why? Well, because the N800 runs on Linux and is completely open source! (Hear that ?)

Of course it also has two expansion card slots, a removable battery, a built-in “kick stand”... Here’s a run-down:

  • Nokia N800High-resolution widescreen display (4.1”, 800×480)
  • Zooming, full-screen and panning functionality
  • Web Browser (Opera 8 with Flash 7)
  • Internet calling with video
  • Instant Messaging
  • E-mail
  • Media player (audio: AAC, AMR, MP2, MP3, RA, WAV, WMA; video: 3GP, AVI, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-4, RV)
  • Image viewer (BMP, GIF, ICO, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, SVG-tiny)
  • Internet Radio (M3U, PLS)
  • RSS Feed Reader
  • Full-screen, touch keyboard (don’t get suckered into thinking that the iPhone is the only one)
  • Handwriting recognition
  • High quality stereo speakers
  • Media player
  • UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
  • Expandable mass memory (SD, MicroSD, MiniSD, MMC, and RS-MMC)
  • Auto connection to saved Wi-Fi hotspots or through Bluetooth compatible phones
  • WLAN: 802.11b/g
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • USB 2.0

  • The Dimensions:
  • Weight: 7.27 ounces
  • Height: 2.95 in
  • Width: 5.7 in
  • Thickness: 0.5 in

I’ll keep you posted…

Ha ha ha! Naw, not sour on Apple (nice pun, by the way)... I just think they’re missing the mark with the iPhone — especially since most Apple users are used to openness and personalization, not closed-core cell phone and wireless contracts.

This thing looks great. I checked Nokia’s site for it and got a closer look. I didn’t realize it was a Linux device. Looks like a lot of power for the money. It doesn’t have regular cell phone functionality, right? But it does do VOIP, so if you’re down with Skype or just IMing everyone, you’re straight.

It would really rock as a nice way to surf and do light web-based work without having to lug around a laptop. I’d have to see if my favorite webapps work with Opera, unless you can get Firefox running on it. Looks like a great device.

Yeah, what you said. ;-) Actually, I’m getting pretty excited about it — or whatever is out by mid-March.

But will it make my sandwiches before I leave for work?

I like the iPhone, too. But I’m probably not the sort of person who is going to pony up that much cash for a cell phone. I kind of like having my devices separate. If I run down the battery on my iPod, I can still call people. If I drop my cheap cell phone, no worries (and, for some reason, I’m always dropping my phone but almost never drop my iPod). But a cheap cell phone + this thing would be pretty sweet.

But Linux and openness is good, too. And it’s pretty exciting in a device like this. It looks like there’s already some community support (over at maemo.org), so you can expect to find your favorite Linux apps ported over and some help with anything odd you want to try.

Andy ~ No sandwiches, but it makes a mean Black & Tan, so that’s pretty ok by me.

Wheat ~ You brought up something that I hadn’t ever articulated before: “and, for some reason, I’m always dropping my phone but almost never drop my iPod”.

How weird is that phenomenon?!
