Happy New Year? Where have I been?
During the holiday season, it’s hard to notice if a blogger goes missing. People are out-and-about, either at family functions, parties, or shopping events… But, I have been missing. Since last Friday, in fact. And for nothing fun like I just mentioned.
Remember this? That was a couple of weeks ago. And, I had the same thing happen a few months before as well (just prior to a business trip). Last Thursday, it happened again…
The pain was excruciating. At some pint, I could barely even walk anymore. I didn’t have an appetite. I had a fever of 101. Julianna wanted to take me to the hospital. But, I had an appointment with my family doc scheduled for the next morning anyway — to follow-up with some hip and blood stuff — and I convinced Julianna to let me sleep and take care of whatever it was that was ailing me later. (In any case, the doctor was just going to tell me that I had a bad case of gas and I would go right to work after my appointment.)
The next morning, despite the snow storm, I made the forty-five minute drive (normally twenty minutes) to the hospital where my doctor’s office is located. And, after seeing me, he had me head directly to the Imaging Department to get a CAT scan. Well, so much for my premonition from last night — my day was shot.
The make this terribly long and horrendous story short, I did end up having Appendicitis. In fact, according to the surgeon, it was a rip-roaring case too. And, to make my terribly long and horrendous stay at the hospital even longer, they ended up not being able to do the surgery laparoscopically, but had to cut me up the old-fashioned way (or, as the doctors in the hospital like to say, the “classic” way).
So, I was in the hospital from 9:00 in the morning on Friday to about 6:30 in the evening on Monday, New Year’s Eve. They actually wanted me to stay one more day, but we convinced them that I was able to go home… I mean, who wants to spend New Year’s Eve in the hospital anyway?
So, for those of you who didn’t think I had one more in me for 2007… Better think twice next time, all right?
And, again, my family and my friends were all just incredible. They helped keep me company, they helped support Julianna, they watched our son and our dog…
Julianna, of course, was simply amazing. I stress her out so much with these sorts of things and she handles them all so well. I am blessed to haver her for a wife.
I’m sure that some of you are just looking for the gross picture that I usually include with these kinds of posts. Well, be warned, this is a doosey: click here to see the difference between a healthy appendix (on the left) and mine (on the right).
But, out of all of this, at least I have an easy New Year’s Resolution: To not have any surgery in 2008.
We’ll see…
